Dr. Flynn completed litigation support to evaluate a scalding incident as part of a criminal investigation. This included investigation into the hot-water heater and lack of anti-scald devices involved in the incident, evaluation of thermal “stacking” which can result in water temperatures greatly in excess of the thermostat setting, and fluid/dye experiments on mannequins to reproduce burn patterns. Overall, it was found the water temperature in the residence in question could range from 127–154 degrees Fahrenheit (°F), which can cause partial thickness scalding in less than a second (in children). If the victim were even momentarily exposed to these temperatures, 2nd and 3rd degree burns would occur.
The case did not go to trial.
